Progress Exceeds 60%! Latest Updates on Chengdu Station Expansion and Renovation
Recently, at the construction site of the Chengdu Station expansion and renovation project, over 1,000 workers and more than 30 large machines are fully engaged in foundation and structural work for the station building. The project has already completed over 60% of its overall progress.
After renovation, Chengdu Station will expand from 6 platforms and 12 tracks to 10 platforms and 18 tracks, with a station building area of 80,000 square meters. As a core project of the Southwest regional railway hub, it is an important component of Chengdu’s “four main, three auxiliary” passenger station layout. It will integrate high-speed rail, regional railways, Metro Lines 1, 7, and 18, and bus services to achieve “three-dimensional zero-transfer connectivity.”
Chengdu Station rendering
Chengdu Station was originally built in 1952 as the starting and terminal station for New China’s first railway—the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway. On October 11, 2022, the station suspended passenger services and began expansion and renovation. Upon completion, the station will handle transportation for lines including the Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Route High-Speed Rail, effectively alleviating traffic pressure at Chengdu East Station and Chengdu West Station while enhancing regional transportation hub functionality.
Due to the construction site’s location in a bustling urban area adjacent to railway lines, the Second Ring Road, and Metro Lines 1 and 7, traffic management and safety control present significant challenges. Additionally, with Metro Line 18 passing beneath the station building, construction teams must overcome difficulties including 40-meter deep foundation pits and water drainage issues. Advanced support and drainage technologies are being employed to ensure safety and stability. For some foundation piles reaching 45 meters deep with 2-meter diameters, a 65-ton full-casing method is used for precise hole formation. Furthermore, with steel structure installations spanning up to 90 meters, the “ground pre-assembly + integral lifting” technique is efficiently completing high-altitude installations.
Chengdu Station
Chengdu Station is the main railway station in Chengdu, China, which opened in 1952. It has long served as a crucial transportation hub in southwestern China, connecting the region to major national rail lines.
Chengdu-Chongqing Railway
The Chengdu-Chongqing Railway was the first railway built in southwestern China after the establishment of the People’s Republic, opening to traffic in 1952. It connected the two major economic centers of Chengdu and Chongqing, dramatically improving transportation and logistics in the Sichuan Basin. Its construction played a vital role in the region’s post-war industrial development and economic integration.
Chengdu East Station
Chengdu East Station is a major high-speed railway hub in Chengdu, China, which opened in 2011. It was built to accommodate the growing demand for high-speed rail services, particularly along the Chengdu–Chongqing and other intercity lines. The modern station serves as a key transportation gateway for the city and western China.
Chengdu West Station
Chengdu West Station is a major railway hub in Chengdu, China, primarily serving high-speed and intercity rail services. It was originally opened in the early 20th century but underwent a significant reconstruction and modernization, reopening in 2018 to accommodate the growing demands of rail travel in southwestern China. The station now stands as a key transportation gateway for the Chengdu metropolitan area.
Second Ring Road
The Second Ring Road is a major expressway encircling central Beijing, originally built along the path of the city’s historic Ming Dynasty walls and gates. Its construction in the 1980s and subsequent upgrades were part of a massive modernization effort to manage the city’s growing traffic. Today, it remains a critical, though often congested, transportation artery defining the core of urban Beijing.
Metro Line 1
Metro Line 1 in Paris, France, is one of the city’s oldest and most important metro lines. It first opened in 1900 to serve the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) and connect key sites across the city. Today, it is a major east-west artery, famously automated, and provides access to landmarks like the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées.
Metro Line 7
Metro Line 7 is a major subway line in Seoul, South Korea, which first opened in 1996. It was constructed to improve public transportation access for the growing population in the city’s northwestern areas, including the districts of Nowon and Eunpyeong. The line is known for its distinctive lime green color and for connecting key transfer hubs like Express Bus Terminal Station.
Metro Line 18
Metro Line 18 is a modern driverless metro line in Paris, France, also known as the Grand Paris Express. It was first opened in stages beginning in 2021 and is a key part of a major infrastructure project designed to better connect the suburbs around the French capital. The line significantly improves transport links to critical hubs, including Paris-Orly Airport.
