On November 27, the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway completed full track laying. The image shows an aerial view of the track laying operation.

On November 27, with the final pair of 500-meter-long steel rails smoothly laid on the Shending River Super Major Bridge in the Hubei section of the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway, the entire track laying for the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway was completed. This marks the successful connection between the Wuhan-Shiyan high-speed railway and the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway, laying a solid foundation for the timely completion and operation of the Wuhan-Xi’an high-speed railway.

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway starts from Xi’an East Station, passing through Lantian, Shangluo West, Shanyang, Manyanguan, and Yunxi stations, connecting to the existing Shiyan East Station. The main line spans 255.7 kilometers with a design speed of 350 km/h.

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway traverses the Qinling Mountains, with bridges and tunnels accounting for 95% of the route, involving 14 sections of track laying on long steep slopes. Since the full track laying began on September 8 this year, construction units optimized construction techniques and coordinated resource allocation to overcome complex conditions including continuous passage through dense long steep slope groups and track laying in the confined space of the 22.9-kilometer single-tunnel single-track tunnel, the longest of its kind in China’s railway system. To ensure safe and orderly track laying, construction units innovatively used high-power crawler tractors combined with heavy track laying equipment, supplemented by continuous ventilation and smoke exhaust systems, achieving a maximum daily track laying of 10 kilometers and an average daily track laying of 6 kilometers. The track laying completion point is located on the Shending River Super Major Bridge of the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway. The bridge spans 841.05 meters with the highest pier reaching 108 meters, making it the super major bridge with the highest piers along the entire Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway route.

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway is part of the Wuhan-Xi’an high-speed railway. The Wuhan-Shiyan high-speed railway has been in operation since November 29, 2019.

After the Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway opens, travel time between Xi’an and Shiyan will be reduced to within 1 hour, while the railway journey between Wuhan and Xi’an will be shortened from the current 5 hours to approximately 2.5 hours.

Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway is a major railway line in central China that opened in November 2023, connecting the historic city of Xi’an with Shiyan in Hubei province. Its construction was a key infrastructure project designed to cut travel time across the mountainous Qinba region from over 5 hours to approximately 2 hours. This railway enhances regional connectivity and economic development, while also improving access to the famous Wudang Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Shending River Super Major Bridge

The Shending River Super Major Bridge is a modern engineering marvel located in China, constructed as part of the country’s extensive high-speed railway network. It was built to traverse the challenging terrain of the Shending River valley, significantly reducing travel time and improving connectivity in the region.

Wuhan-Shiyan high-speed railway

The Wuhan-Shiyan high-speed railway is a major railway line in Hubei Province, China, which opened in November 2019. It significantly reduced travel time between the cities of Wuhan and Shiyan, cutting the journey from over five hours to approximately two hours. This project was part of China’s national strategy to improve regional connectivity and economic development in central China.

Wuhan-Xi’an high-speed railway

The Wuhan-Xi’an high-speed railway is a major transportation link in central China, opened in stages between 2016 and 2017. It forms a crucial section of the national high-speed rail network, dramatically reducing travel time between the two cities to approximately four hours. This railway traverses the mountainous Qinling region, requiring extensive tunnels and bridges to connect the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River with the northwest.

Xi’an East Station

Xi’an East Station is a major high-speed railway station in Xi’an, China, which opened in 2016. It was built to serve the expanding high-speed rail network and to alleviate congestion at the older Xi’an Station, becoming a key transport hub for the city.

Shiyan East Station

Shiyan East Station is a modern high-speed railway station in Shiyan, Hubei Province, China, primarily serving the Wuhan–Xi’an High-Speed Railway. It opened in November 2019 to improve regional transportation and support the local automotive industry. The station facilitates faster travel connections and economic development for the city.

Qinling Mountains

The Qinling Mountains are a major east-west mountain range in central China that have historically served as a natural boundary between the country’s north and south, influencing climate and agriculture. This range is a critical habitat for unique wildlife, including the giant panda, and holds deep cultural significance as the location of numerous tombs from the Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties. Its slopes are also home to sacred Taoist and Buddhist mountains, such as Hua Shan, which have been pilgrimage sites for centuries.

Lantian

Lantian is a county in Shaanxi Province, China, renowned for the 1963 discovery of “Lantian Man.” These fossil remains of *Homo erectus* are approximately 1.6 million years old, making them one of the oldest known hominid fossils in China. The find is a landmark in paleoanthropology, providing crucial evidence for early human habitation in East Asia.
