A sun halo phenomenon was observed by residents in the sky and went viral on social media. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency provided an explanation for the appearance of this halo or solar ring phenomenon.

From circulating videos, light surrounding the sun was visible. The agency explained that this phenomenon occurs due to the interaction of sunlight with ice crystals in the atmospheric layer.

“This phenomenon forms due to the interaction of sunlight with hexagonal ice crystals located in the upper atmospheric layer, specifically in high-level cirrostratus clouds,”

It was stated that light penetrating these ice crystals is refracted and reflected, then forms a ring pattern with a radius of about 22 degrees from the center of the Sun. The halo ring color can typically appear like a faint rainbow, with the inner part tending to be reddish and the outer part bluish.

“The sun halo is a natural phenomenon that is not dangerous and occurs quite frequently, especially during clear weather with high clouds in the sky,”

The agency urged the public not to panic about the appearance of this sun halo phenomenon. It was emphasized that this phenomenon is not related to any danger signs.

“The public is advised to remain calm and enjoy its beauty as part of natural dynamics,”

Residents were also advised to avoid looking directly at the sun without glasses. The public is encouraged to use UV-filtered sunglasses or special camera filters to safely observe and document this phenomenon.

“Regular monitoring of atmospheric and weather conditions will continue to be conducted,”
