The spring delicacy of Hokkaido, “Gyoja Ninniku” (wild garlic), is now in season.
This wild vegetable sprouts in clusters as the snow melts. This year, the snow melted early, and produce from the southern part of Hokkaido arrived at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market on the 10th. From now until after the Golden Week holidays, shipments will arrive from various regions across Hokkaido.
Hokkaido
Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost and second-largest island, historically inhabited by the indigenous Ainu people before significant Japanese settlement began in the late 19th century during the Meiji era. Today, it is renowned for its vast natural landscapes, major cities like Sapporo, and distinct seasonal attractions, blending its unique cultural heritage with modern development.
Sapporo Central Wholesale Market
The Sapporo Central Wholesale Market, commonly known as **Curb Market (Jōgai Ichiba)**, is a historic public market established in 1920. It was originally a hub for local fishermen and farmers to sell fresh Hokkaido produce, seafood, and agricultural goods directly to consumers and restaurants. Today, it remains a bustling landmark where visitors can experience the island’s famed culinary bounty, including seafood auctions and seasonal specialties.
