From Saturday, October 25, 2025, to Monday, January 12, 2026, the special exhibition “Atlas of the Sky: Treasures of the Italian Pavilion” will be held at the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art in Tennoji Ward, Osaka, commemorating the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy and the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

This exhibition aims to establish the art pieces from the Italian Pavilion, which gained attention at the Osaka-Kansai Expo, as cultural assets in Osaka.

At this exhibition, you can view the following works:

This piece is a marble sculpture depicting the mythological giant Atlas, displayed at the Osaka-Kansai Expo Italian Pavilion. The celestial sphere is engraved with constellations and the zodiac, conveying the sophistication of ancient sculpture.

This work was created as a “Gonfalone” (religious procession banner) used for religious and public purposes in 15th-16th century Italy, believed to have been carried in public processions and worship or religious ceremonies.

This is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Codex Atlanticus” from the Renaissance period.

This is also one of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Codex Atlanticus”.

This valuable exhibition features a selection of masterpieces displayed at the Osaka-Kansai Expo Italian Pavilion, including “Farnese Atlas” symbolizing the flow of Western art history from antiquity to the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci’s manuscript “Codex Atlanticus” representing the Renaissance genius, and the masterpiece “Banner of Justice” by Perugino, the teacher of the great master Raphael.

Farnese Atlas

The Farnese Atlas is a 2nd-century Roman marble sculpture depicting the Titan Atlas holding the celestial sphere on his shoulders. It is a Roman copy of a lost Hellenistic Greek original and is one of the oldest known representations of the celestial globe from classical antiquity. Codex Atlanticus

The Codex Atlanticus is a vast collection of drawings and writings by Leonardo da Vinci, compiled into a single monumental volume. It covers a wide range of his interests, from anatomy and flight to engineering and weaponry, created between 1478 and 1519. The name “Atlanticus” derives from the large atlas-like size of the pages used for its assembly in the 17th century.
