Depok City –
The Directorate General of Immigration arrested a foreign national from the United States with the initials AW. The man was wanted by US law enforcement and fled to Indonesia.
“AW is known to have entered Indonesia since 2011 to avoid legal proceedings for a sexual abuse case he committed in the United States,” according to a statement from the Directorate General of Immigration on their Instagram account on Friday (June 5, 2026).
AW had been a fugitive from US law enforcement for at least 15 years. During his escape in Indonesia, AW falsified his identity.
AW also committed other immigration violations, including misuse of travel documents. The Directorate General of Immigration arrested AW, who was hiding in a bunker at his house in the Sawangan area, Depok City, West Java, on Thursday (April 23).
“From an immigration perspective, AW was proven to have committed serious violations, including using false identity and misuse of travel documents,” the statement said.
AW fled his country to avoid legal proceedings for the case he committed in the US. In Indonesia, he also hid to avoid detection.

This case came to light after a woman with the initials NM reported to the Directorate General of Immigration that she and her two children had their freedom restricted by AW and were victims. The Directorate General of Immigration then facilitated the victim NM and her children to return to the US.
After that, the Directorate General of Immigration focused on arresting AW. The Directorate General of Immigration arrested AW after receiving a request for assistance from the US Embassy and conducting a series of investigations and intelligence operations.
AW’s hiding place was discovered, and the man was finally arrested by officers. The Directorate General of Immigration then coordinated with US authorities.
AW has also been processed for his immigration violations and deported to the US.
“The individual has been subjected to immigration administrative actions including detention, deportation, and blacklisting,” the statement said.
The Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko emphasized that this success demonstrates the effectiveness of immigration supervision. He said Immigration is committed to maintaining national security and sovereignty through the application of the selective policy principle and the spirit of “Immigration for the People.”
