Depok City –
A foreign national from the United States, identified by the initials AW, was arrested while hiding in a house bunker in Depok, West Java. The fugitive in a sexual abuse case in the US was deported to his home country.
“The individual has been subjected to immigration administrative actions including detention, deportation, and blacklisting,” said the Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, in a statement on Saturday (June 6, 2026).
The Directorate General of Immigration arrested AW, who was hiding in a house bunker in the Sawangan area, Depok City, West Java, on Thursday (April 23). AW was known to have entered Indonesia since 2011.
AW fled his home country to avoid legal proceedings for a sexual abuse case he committed in the US. In Indonesia, he also hid to avoid detection.
The case came to light after a woman with the initials NM reported to the Immigration Directorate General that she and her two children were subjected to restrictions on their freedom by AW and were victims of sexual abuse. The Immigration Directorate General then facilitated the victim NM and her children to return to the US.
After that, the Immigration Directorate General focused on arresting AW. They captured AW after receiving a request for assistance from the US Embassy and conducting a series of investigations and intelligence operations.
“The Immigration Directorate General then coordinated with US authorities to trace AW’s legal status until his whereabouts were found and secured in Depok,” he said.
In Indonesia, AW was also proven to have committed violations including the use of false identity and misuse of travel documents.
Hendarsam emphasized that this success demonstrates the effectiveness of immigration supervision and the Immigration’s commitment to maintaining state security and sovereignty through the application of the selective policy principle and the spirit of “Immigration for the People.”
