Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas expressed appreciation for the Belawan District Prosecutor’s Office’s decision to halt prosecution against 21 suspects in a criminal theft case through the restorative justice mechanism.

Rico Waas considered this step a victory for humanity.

“Today we witness not only a legal victory but also a victory for humanity,” said Rico Waas, who was present at the Belawan District Prosecutor’s Office.

Nevertheless, Rico Waas delivered a firm message to the suspects not to repeat their actions.

“Never repeat these actions again. Use this opportunity to reunite with your families and community, do not waste it, as we will continue to monitor,” emphasized Rico Waas.

Rico Waas also appreciated the sincerity of PT ARB’s Director as the victim party who had forgiven the suspects.

“Achieving Restorative Justice is not easy; it requires mediation, a peace process, and forgiveness from the victim to the suspects,” stated Rico Waas.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Belawan District Prosecutor’s Office explained that the successful implementation of restorative justice was due to synergy between the Belawan District Prosecutor’s Office, Medan City Government, and the victim party in law enforcement, particularly in the North Medan area.

“We prioritize this program, but its implementation remains selective and subjective,” clarified the Head.

The Head also mentioned that restorative justice must meet several requirements, including reconciliation from the victim, insignificant losses caused, the suspect not being a repeat offender, and the potential sentence not exceeding five years.

“The main goal of restorative justice is the recovery of the victim,” stated the Head.

The Head also revealed that the 21 suspects to be released would be given social work responsibilities.

“We will impose social sanctions on them. I hope these suspects will not commit other crimes and will help maintain security in North Medan,” hoped the Head.

One of the 21 suspects who received justice through the restorative justice mechanism expressed regret for committing the theft crime.

The iron bars and cold prison floor made them realize the need to return to the right path as commanded by Allah SWT.

“This is not a test but a warning from Allah SWT for me to be more steadfast in carrying out His commands. I promise never to repeat this action again,” they stated.
