On the afternoon of August 8, the Criminal Police Department of An Giang Province announced the arrest and transfer of suspect Phan Thien Phuoc (24 years old, residing in Thanh Dong commune, An Giang Province) from Vinh Long Province. Phuoc is considered a “ringleader” in Rach Gia and had been subject to a special arrest warrant for “murder” issued by the investigative police agency of Kien Giang Province (formerly).

According to the investigation, a prior conflict existed between a Rach Gia group led by Truong Em and a Rach Soi group, which included Phan Thien Phuoc and several other suspects.

On the afternoon of July 29, 2022, Truong Em sent a message challenging Phan Thien Phuoc to a fight. At this point, Phuoc and Truong Em gathered additional members of their groups, arming themselves with homemade knives, swords, spears, and Molotov cocktails to settle the dispute.

Around 1:30 AM on July 30, 2022, when Truong Em’s group arrived at the Nguyen Thien Thuat roundabout, Phuoc’s group ambushed them from multiple directions, forcing Truong Em’s group to flee.

At this moment, Do Phu Huong (23 years old, residing in Rach Gia ward, An Giang Province) failed to escape in time and was stabbed multiple times with homemade knives and spears by suspects from Phuoc’s group. Huong collapsed, and the group fled the scene.

Huong was taken to Kien Giang General Hospital for emergency treatment. After recovery, he was discharged with a 51% disability rate.

During the investigation, Phuoc fled the area. On February 7, the provincial police issued a special arrest warrant for Phan Thien Phuoc for “murder.”

After evading capture in multiple locations, Phan Thien Phuoc was apprehended by An Giang Provincial Criminal Police on the afternoon of August 7 while hiding in Tan Hoa commune, Vinh Long Province.

The case is currently under further investigation by An Giang Provincial Police in accordance with legal procedures.

A teacher and martial arts instructor in An Giang killed a colleague with 10 stab wounds but was later determined to be mentally ill. The incident caused public uproar.
