Plans to build an art museum in Machida City are under review due to rising material costs and strong opposition from residents.
In the central Serigaya Park, the city is proceeding with a development project centered on constructing a new museum. The plan has been in the works for about 15 years, but due to soaring prices and opposition from nearby residents, it has faced difficulties, forcing the city to significantly revise the plan.
At an event held on the 22nd regarding the park development plan for residents, alongside opportunities to touch crafts and other items intended to be housed in the museum, panels about the park development were displayed. As a light rain fell, visitors asked questions such as, "Does this mean you are restarting the plan from scratch?" In response, city staff answered, "We are reviewing the plan," while listening to opinions.
The city held the event because the mayor, who became mayor in March of this year, decided to review the plan for the new museum and stated, "First, we will listen to the voices of the citizens."
