Sapporo

Sapporo is the largest city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, known for its modern urban planning and the annual Sapporo Snow Festival. Originally developed in the late 19th century as a colonial outpost, it was modeled after a grid system inspired by Western cities and became the capital of Hokkaido in 1886. The city is also famous for its beer and as the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics.
