The Nuansa Mekarsari 1 housing complex in Rajeg District, Tangerang Regency, has been flooded since Friday, January 2, and continues to be affected.
Approximately hundreds of residents’ homes were impacted, with water levels reaching 40 centimeters due to heavy rainfall on Friday night.
“Most of our residents are from middle to lower economic backgrounds, so every flood causes significant losses, especially to household appliances,” stated the head of Neighborhood Unit 06 of the Nuansa Mekarsari 1 complex.
According to the neighborhood head, the Nuansa Mekarsari housing complex has long been prone to flooding, primarily caused by the suboptimal drainage system channeling water from the complex to the Cirarab River.
Meanwhile, the Tangerang Regent conveyed that some residents affected by the flood have evacuated to shelters around the location.
“Last night, the rain fell continuously without stopping, causing the flood. Some residents are still staying in their homes, but others have been evacuated,” they said while surveying the flood area.
To meet the needs of the evacuees, the Tangerang Regency Government has also prepared logistical aid and set up public kitchens for use by the affected residents.
“For the short term, we are ensuring that logistical aid and the needs of evacuated residents are promptly met,” they stated.
The Regent added that authorities will soon begin normalizing the drainage channels leading to the Cirarab River, which residents have long complained is the main cause of flooding.
“For the medium and long term, we will carry out channel normalization, bridge elevation, and prepare pumping systems to accelerate water drainage this year,” they concluded.
