276 Residents in Banten Apply for Witness and Victim Protection, Mostly in Money Laundering Cases
A total of 276 residents of Banten Province have submitted requests for protection to the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) during 2024.
The head of LPSK explained that the majority of reports received were related to money laundering crimes and sexual violence crimes.
“In Banten Province, the average is the highest, not only here, the number of sexual violence cases is quite high and the victims are very diverse, and the recovery process is also long-term,” the official stated in Tangerang.
Out of the total 276 applications received, LPSK successfully handled 143 cases. The majority of these handled cases included 93 money laundering crime cases and 67 cases of sexual violence against children.
Additionally, there were 21 cases of sexual violence not involving children and 21 cases of human trafficking crimes, along with other criminal offenses.
“So it’s not just about protection, but prevention is also very important and must be promoted because sexual violence is deeply rooted across various sectors and regions,” the official stated.
The highest number of protection requests in Banten Province came from Tangerang Regency with 112 requests, followed by Tangerang City with 91 requests, and South Tangerang City with 77 requests.
Meanwhile, a deputy explained that money laundering crimes frequently occur using illegal investment schemes.
“Illegal investment schemes are the most common,” the deputy added.
Furthermore, they explained that the trend of protection requests from victims and witnesses of sexual violence crimes increases every year. This proves that victims of sexual violence have become more courageous in reporting.
“In fact, sexual violence cases have started to rise now, with serious human rights violations ranking third after sexual violence cases,” they stated.
