Medan Mayor Rico Tri Putra Bayu Waas received a visit from the Student Executive Board of Pelita Harapan University at the Mayor’s Official Residence. In addition to supporting the university’s “Spirit Run 5K” event, the Mayor also invited students to undertake fieldwork internships at the Medan City Government to understand public administration management.

Rico Waas appreciated and considered the “Spirit Run 5K” sports event a positive initiative involving community participation.

However, the Mayor emphasized that any event, especially one involving public spaces, must be thoroughly prepared and coordinated with relevant regional agencies. He stressed the importance of route readiness and fulfilling technical requirements to ensure participant safety.

“The route must be well-prepared so that key points can be secured. Event requirements must also be met,” he said.

Beyond discussing event logistics, the Mayor also discussed with the students the role of the younger generation in governance. He invited students not only to understand concepts theoretically but also to engage directly in community service through experience within the Medan City Government environment.

According to him, students can gain much learning from hands-on practice, from the planning process and regulations to the implementation of public policies. He considered such experience important for forming a comprehensive understanding of public service and managing community interests.

The Mayor also opened opportunities for students to carry out fieldwork internships within the Medan City Government as part of that learning process.

The Chairperson of the Student Executive Board of Pelita Harapan University presented the plan for the “Spirit Run 5K” event, scheduled for Saturday, April 25, in the Taman Kebun Bunga area, involving hundreds of participants. The Mayor was invited to attend the event.
