Medan

Retired police officer Brigadier General Raziman Tarigan (75) was involved in an accident while driving an ATV near his business premises on Jalan Melati Raya, Medan Selayang District, Medan City. Tragically, Raziman lost his life in the accident.

The incident occurred on Saturday (18/4/2026) in the afternoon. No one witnessed the exact moment of the accident.

Several traders or residents at the location only became aware of the accident after hearing a loud impact. The cause of the accident that killed the former Deputy Chief of Metro Jaya Police is still under investigation by the police.

An eyewitness named Joko (45) said the accident happened around 6:15 PM local time. At the time, Joko was selling goods in front of Raziman’s business.

Joko admitted he did not see the accident directly because he was busy packing up his merchandise. However, he suddenly heard a loud crash.

Startled, Joko turned toward the sound and saw Raziman lying on the ground and the ATV he was driving overturned. Joko said he immediately recognized the victim as Raziman upon seeing the ATV, as Raziman frequently rode it.

“He was riding the ATV alone,” Joko said in an interview on Wednesday (22/4).

To Joko’s knowledge, Raziman had just returned from buying food, as the food was scattered on the road at the time of the incident.

Joko, along with several other residents, helped Raziman. He observed that Raziman had a head injury.

“His head was bleeding,” Joko said.

Joko does not know for sure whether the victim was hit by another vehicle, as he did not see the accident directly. However, at the time of the incident, a trader saw a motorcyclist speeding.

Nevertheless, he could not confirm whether that motorcycle struck the victim or not.

Police Efforts

The Head of Traffic Unit for Medan Police, AKBP Widodo, stated that they are conducting a series of investigations into the accident case. From CCTV footage, the victim was driving the ATV slowly, at an estimated speed of only about 20 km/h.

“From the CCTV, the speed was slow, about 20 km/h, roughly that,” Widodo said on Friday (24/4).

According to family statements, Widodo said Raziman had initially gone to buy fried snacks and was returning to his business. At that time, Raziman was coming from the direction of Simpang Pemda.

Widodo stated that about three CCTV recordings from around the location have been collected by the authorities. These cameras only cover the moments before the accident.

On the first CCTV, the victim is seen riding the ATV. At that time, there were two motorcycles behind Raziman.

Then, Widodo said, on the next CCTV, the two motorcycles are seen overtaking the victim, and the accident had not yet occurred.

The mid-ranking police officer said they are still working to gather more CCTV footage, including any that directly captured the accident. Currently, police have not found CCTV that recorded the accident itself.

Police are also investigating whether the victim was involved in a single-vehicle accident or if another vehicle was involved.

“Not yet (found), we are utilizing CCTV from residents’ homes, we are tracing it, we will first confirm based on the facts,” he explained.
