The 2025 Indonesian Student Gala Tournament (GSI) among Junior High Schools (SMP) in Medan City, held at the Cadika Football Field in Medan Johor, officially concluded. The five-day event featured 21 student football teams from 21 districts across Medan.
The closing ceremony of GSI was lively, highlighted by the final match where Medan Kota District secured first place after defeating Medan Maimun District’s football team with a final score of 1-0.
The sportsmanship-driven match was attended by the Medan Mayor, accompanied by officials including the Head of Medan City’s National Sports Committee, the Assistant for Governance and Welfare, the Head of Education and Culture, and the Head of Youth and Sports.
In recognition of the SMP student football team from Medan Kota District winning the 2025 GSI, the Mayor awarded them the Medan Mayor’s Trophy and a coaching grant of Rp 10 million.
The second-place team, Medan Maimun District, received a trophy and Rp 8 million, while the third-place team, Medan Selayang District, was awarded a trophy and Rp 6 million. The fourth-place team, Medan Labuhan District, received a trophy and Rp 4 million.
Additionally, football equipment was distributed to three students, and awards were given to top scorers Affandi and M Fikri, each with 5 goals. The best player award went to Adlyano Alfarizi, and the Favorite Team award was given to Medan Barat District.
“Today marks the climax of GSI 2025, where we witnessed the final match between Medan Kota and Medan Maimun,” said the Mayor in his speech.
“Alhamdulillah, it went exceptionally well. The skill level, teamwork, and sportsmanship displayed were beyond what you’d expect from junior high students—it was almost professional,” he added, praising both teams.
The Mayor emphasized that GSI serves as motivation not only for the athletes but also for the Medan City Government.
“We see extraordinary potential in Medan’s youth. This must be nurtured, ensuring their future in school and training is supported,” he explained.
He also reminded organizers that the best players might not always come from the top two teams, urging attention to all 21 participating teams. “There could be outstanding players among them who deserve recognition,” he said.
To the GSI 2025 champions, the Mayor congratulated them on their achievement but reminded them that victory or defeat is not the end. “What matters is the spirit, sportsmanship, and camaraderie learned here. Winning and losing are part of the journey—keep improving for future successes,” he stated.
He further appreciated the Medan City Education and Culture Office for organizing GSI and expressed hope for its continued improvement year after year.
“Thanks also to the teachers and parents of the competing students,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Head of Education and Culture explained that GSI is an annual event with tiered competitions from district to provincial and national levels.
“We hope GSI participants can excel at higher levels. We’re also committed to scouting for talented and high-achieving football players,” he said.
