Flooding has once again hit several areas in Tebing Tinggi City, North Sumatra, on Sunday afternoon.

The overflow of the Bahilang River, caused by a breached embankment in Sibulan Village, Tebing Syahbandar District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, was the main cause of the flood that submerged residential areas.

A resident of Environment 3, Tualang Village, reported that water began to rise around 4:30 PM local time and immediately entered people’s homes.

“Until this evening the water continues to rise and has already entered houses. We are worried it will get even higher tonight,” they said anxiously.

The head of Persiakan Village stated that their area was one of the first affected because it directly borders Serdang Bedagai Regency, where the river embankment breached.

“Persiakan Village was the first affected by flooding due to the breached river embankment. Water flowed directly into the Bahilang River and overflowed into residential areas,” they explained.

Although unable to confirm the exact number of affected houses, they mentioned that by evening, dozens of houses had already been flooded, with the number likely to keep increasing.

The Head of the Tebing Tinggi City Disaster Management Agency confirmed that this flooding was water coming from Serdang Bedagai due to the breached embankment in Sibulan Village.

“Our team is still conducting monitoring and data collection. We cannot yet provide exact numbers of affected houses or districts because water levels continue to rise,” they stated from the flood location.

The Disaster Management Agency remains on alert but has not yet established an emergency post. However, if the situation worsens by tomorrow, a post will likely be set up immediately.

“Our personnel will continue monitoring in the field through the night. We are watching how the situation develops tonight,” they concluded.
