Mysterious Smoke Cloud in Sukmajaya Reveals Underground Electrical Cable Fire, Two Firefighters Injured
Residents of Sukmajaya, Depok City, were startled by sudden smoke emerging from the base of a lamppost. This initially mysterious incident was eventually revealed to be an underground electrical cable fire.
The incident began on Sunday evening when residents reported smoke coming from the ground. The Merdeka Fire Department intervened on Monday morning to determine the cause.
Initially, suspicion didn’t point to electricity because PLN’s inspection with a test pen showed no current flow. However, around 09:25 AM Western Indonesia Time, the smoke intensified. Firefighters spraying water directly discovered a surprising fact.
“From the handling results, we concluded that underground electrical cables were burning,” explained the Head of Fire and Rescue Operational Control Department.
The handling process involving Ciracas PLN was full of risks. Two firefighters received strong electric shocks while attempting to help.
“Because it was indeed PLN’s domain, it turned out the electrical current was still active. Two of our members got shocked,” added the official.
This incident adds to the long list of potential dangers from underground electrical installations in densely populated areas.
