A rift in the Trinamool parliamentary party. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership. He submitted his resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman on Monday. Not only that, the veteran politician also left his position in Trinamool. But is Sukhendu now heading towards political renunciation? He did not clarify that.

After resigning, the former MP made a series of explosive statements. He said, “The party did not function the way it should have. After such a huge disaster, the necessary analysis was not done. The opinions of those in various committees were not sought. Despite that, many were gritting their teeth helplessly. The people have expressed no confidence in the government. When people express no confidence, I understood that the party has become disconnected from public sentiment.”

According to him, corruption began in 2011. Sukhendu also raised the issue of a controversial meeting with a chit fund kingpin on Delo Hill immediately after the party came to power. He took a dig at the sale of Mamata Banerjee’s pictures. He said, “Pictures were sold for 10-15 lakh rupees. Some are comparing her to Leonardo da Vinci. The pictures are being bought by chit fund owners. Corruption started from then. The party had no ideals. The agenda was to remove the CPM, come to power, and loot. Neither the people nor we understood that. Over time, corruption took an institutional form.”

He lamented that ‘honest’ leaders were sidelined in the party. With a tone of grievance, the veteran politician said, “Certain people are always hovering around the leadership. Hanging out with people who are disconnected from the public and have no past might yield some profit. But that is not politics. When the party’s administrators become unable to understand the language of the people, the fall of the leader and the party is inevitable.” Comparing it to Indira Gandhi’s defeat, the veteran politician said, “Indira Gandhi returned even after her defeat at the age of sixty. Our leaders are 70, 77. Everyone is a national leader. There are no regional or local leaders. Everyone is a national leader. First, it is necessary to see who owns what and how much property. A forensic audit of everything related to hospitals is needed.”

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has spoken multiple times about the rape and murder of the young doctor at RG Kar. The veteran MP spoke about the incident again today. He said, “I have spoken openly about RG Kar before. I have held sit-ins. I said my crime was that an investigation should be held against RG Kar and the police officer. They were given security. Those who are accused were given security. Seeing all this, I had made up my mind from then. Everyone waits for the right time. I did the same. I knew this would happen. Seeing the public outcry over RG Kar, I understood this would happen. In 2024, after four or five months of great results, the way people took to the streets, I understood from that that this would happen.” Will Sukhendu now take ‘renunciation’ from politics? However, the veteran former MP did not clarify that in today’s press conference. He said he will decide on this later.
