The statue of Lionel Messi is swaying in the wind! A concerning situation arose in Laketown on Monday afternoon. Local residents feared the statue might collapse and cause danger. To prevent such a scenario, engineers from the Public Works Department, government officials, and police from the Laketown police station came to inspect the site. This prompted a social media jibe from Ritwik Chakraborty.

He has often been seen making humorous digs on issues related to cinema or politics. Fans are well aware that Ritwik is unmatched when it comes to taunting on burning issues wrapped in humor. The atmosphere of the 2026 assembly elections was no exception. He did not spare Narendra Modi or the top BJP leadership over the ‘Bengal fiasco’ either! Although his social tone softened somewhat after the election results, he has returned to the spotlight with a sarcastic comment about the Messi statue in Laketown.

Local residents complained that the statue was swaying violently in the wind. A giant screen is located directly beneath the statue. In the evenings, locals gather to watch IPL matches. If the statue collapses during that time, there is a risk of heavy casualties. The ground at the base of the statue has eroded. Stones and soil are exposed all around. It could collapse at any moment!

Lionel Messi's statue in Laketown might be demolished
The statue was built in December 2025 under the supervision of former minister Sujit Bose.

The 70-foot statue was virtually inaugurated by the Argentine football star himself during Messi’s visit to Kolkata. Former Bidhannagar MLA and former fire minister Sujit Bose was present. The statue was essentially built under his supervision and initiative. Artist Monty Pal led the entire project. However, local residents now complain that the statue is swaying violently in the wind. A giant screen is located directly beneath the statue. In the evenings, locals gather to watch IPL matches. If the statue collapses during that time, there is a risk of heavy casualties. The ground at the base of the statue has eroded. Stones and soil are exposed all around. Thus, the risk of the statue collapsing remains. It could fall at any moment! Regarding this, Ritwik taunted, “I heard that the statue of Hrithik Roshan or Ajit Agarkar in Laketown is supposedly humming the song ‘Dulche Hawaye…’ by Nachiketa.” After his post, laughter erupted across social media.

Meanwhile, a local BJP official alleged regarding the issue, “The local councilor Nitai Dutta and former fire minister Sujit Bose hastily built the statue. It was constructed with very low-quality materials. The current MLA Shardwat Mukherjee has been made aware of the matter.” Notably, Sujit Bose was recently arrested by the ED in a municipal recruitment corruption case. Following observations by engineers and government officials, it is speculated that the statue may be demolished. Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, it is assumed that the statue might be taken down on Monday night itself.
