Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Resignation: The political landscape of Karnataka is currently experiencing significant upheaval. If no major last-minute reversal occurs, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may resign from his position today (Thursday). This marks the culmination of internal tensions within Karnataka’s politics that have persisted for the past three years. With this decision, a chapter in his illustrious political journey will come to an end—a journey where he led the state for over eight years and twelve days across two terms, surpassing the historic record of his mentor, D. Devaraj. Meanwhile, there is considerable activity in the corridors of Bengaluru. A senior official at the Karnataka Lok Bhawan has confirmed that Siddaramaiah has sought a meeting with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot for Thursday afternoon.
Siddaramaiah’s Final Masterstroke!
It is believed that after Siddaramaiah’s resignation, the path to the Chief Minister’s chair will clear for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. However, a twist remains in the story! According to sources, Siddaramaiah is not inclined to leave the field easily. He is pressuring the party high command to convene a formal meeting of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) to ensure a democratic election of the new successor. Political analysts suggest this may be Siddaramaiah’s final attempt to prevent Shivakumar from becoming Chief Minister.
Will Parameshwara Become Karnataka’s First Dalit CM?
The calculations within Siddaramaiah’s camp are quite intriguing. They believe that if a secret ballot or formal election occurs during the CLP meeting, state Home Minister G. Parameshwara could emerge as a consensus candidate. As a senior Dalit leader, many legislators may openly support Parameshwara. If this happens, Shivakumar’s chances would be dashed, and Siddaramaiah would receive lifelong credit for giving Karnataka its first Dalit Chief Minister.
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Promise’ and Refusal to Go to Delhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is reported to play a major role in this entire development. According to internal sources, Siddaramaiah has decided to take this step on the instructions of Rahul Gandhi. Siddaramaiah has always remained loyal to Rahul Gandhi because, despite being tagged as an outsider in the party, Rahul helped him become CM twice. Senior legislator R.V. Deshpande has confirmed that despite ministers and legislators trying to stop him, Siddaramaiah stated, “I have given my word to the high command, and I will not back down from my word.” However, while Rahul Gandhi has offered him a Rajya Sabha seat and a significant role in national politics, the 77-year-old Siddaramaiah is currently not inclined to head to Delhi.
Suspense Still Remains
The entire process gained momentum after a long marathon meeting between Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Siddaramaiah in Delhi. When asked about this on Wednesday, Siddaramaiah smiled and simply said, “I will tell everything tomorrow.” Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala has also arrived in Bengaluru to manage the situation. Before submitting his resignation today, Siddaramaiah has arranged a ‘farewell breakfast’ for his cabinet colleagues, which D.K. Shivakumar is also expected to attend. It remains to be seen what new turn this political saga, starting at the breakfast table, takes when it reaches the Raj Bhawan.
