New Delhi, India on Thursday described a social media post by US President Donald Trump, in which he referred to India and some other countries as “hell” in the context of immigration, as “ignorant” and “inappropriate.” India’s response came after Trump reposted comments by a US radio show host, which included derogatory remarks about India. The US President’s post sparked controversy.
The comments were made in reference to a case challenging birthright citizenship in the United States. The US embassy, in an attempt to mitigate the damage caused by these remarks, issued a message stating that Trump believes India is a “great” country led by “a good friend of his.”
A spokesperson said, “We have seen the comments, as well as the statement issued by the US embassy in response.” He added, “These comments are clearly ignorant, inappropriate, and indecent. They certainly do not reflect the reality of India-US relations, which have long been based on mutual respect and shared interests.”
Earlier, the US embassy spokesperson had said, “The President has stated that ‘India is a great country and at its helm is a very good friend of his.'” However, the embassy spokesperson did not clarify where or when Trump made the remark that India is a great country.
