Guwahati: The Guwahati High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail petition of Congress leader Pawan Khera. Pawan Khera had sought bail from the court in a criminal case filed by Assam Chief Minister’s wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma. The wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma filed this case regarding allegations made by Pawan Khera concerning multiple passports and undisclosed properties abroad.
Court had reserved the verdict on Tuesday
On Tuesday, senior lawyers Abhishek Manu Singhvi and K.N. Chaudhary appeared in court on behalf of Pawan Khera. Meanwhile, Advocate General Devajit Saikia appeared on behalf of the Assam government. The hearing on this matter lasted about three hours in the Guwahati High Court on Tuesday. After this, the court had reserved its verdict.
On Tuesday, senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that there is no risk of the petitioner fleeing, so he should be granted bail. He also argued that this is at most a case of criminal defamation, which can only proceed through a private complaint. Meanwhile, Advocate General Devajit Saikia, appearing for the Assam government, argued in court that this is not an ordinary defamation case. He said the main offenses are fraud and forgery.
Pawan Khera had made allegations against Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma
It is noteworthy that on April 5, Pawan Khera held press conferences in Delhi and Guwahati, alleging that Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma has properties abroad. The day after Congress leader Pawan Khera’s allegations, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma filed a criminal case against Pawan Khera and others at the Guwahati Crime Branch police station under various sections of the BNS.

- On April 7, Assam Police raided Pawan Khera’s residence in Delhi.
- On April 10, Pawan Khera received one week of anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court.
