Heavy rainfall and landslides in Sri Lanka cause 31 deaths.
COLOMBO – In Sri Lanka, heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides over the past 11 days have resulted in 31 deaths, with approximately 4,000 people affected. The Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center stated on Thursday that 18 deaths were reported in the central mountainous districts alone.
In a harrowing incident, a passenger bus became trapped amid rising water levels in Kumbukkana, following which emergency teams successfully rescued 23 passengers. Approximately 10 people were reported injured, while 14 individuals are said to be missing.
The President has called a meeting to review the deteriorating situation in 17 out of 25 administrative districts. According to the Meteorological Bureau, a low-pressure area formed in the country’s southeast, which later developed into a depression.

The bureau reported that it is currently located 210 kilometers southeast of Batticaloa. The bureau stated, “There is a strong likelihood that it will move northwestward over the next 12 hours, intensifying and developing into a deep depression.” The bureau forecasted that various parts of the country could receive over 200 millimeters of rainfall.
