Kolkata, Two leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including a sitting MLA, approached the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday seeking protection from police action in connection with cases filed against them following the West Bengal Assembly election results.

Kishore Datta, the lawyer for Canning West MLA Paresh Ram Das, requested an urgent hearing in the matter and informed the court that six FIRs were registered against his client on May 16. He claimed that several more complaints are likely to be filed. Datta, who served as the Advocate General of West Bengal during the Trinamool Congress government, told Justice Sougata Bhattacharya’s bench that he is seeking protection for his client from any coercive action related to the criminal cases registered against him.

Justice Bhattacharya said he would hear the petition on Thursday. Das was elected for the second consecutive time from the Canning West assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district with a margin of over 40,000 votes. Kailash Kumar Mishra, the Trinamool Congress candidate who lost from Bally in Howrah district, filed another petition before the bench seeking protection from coercive action over a criminal case registered against him after the assembly election results were announced on May 4. The court said the matter would be listed for hearing on Thursday’s schedule.
