British Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the British Indian community ahead of Diwali, stating that through hard work, values, and generosity, the community has shaped Britain’s economy. Ahead of Diwali on October 20th, the Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street in London has been decorated with lamps and flowers.

Heartfelt Appreciation for the Indian Community’s Contribution

Referring to his recent visit to India, Starmer said in a message, “Just a few days ago, I lit a lamp in Mumbai, and this evening, a lamp has been lit at Downing Street as a symbol of hope, unity, and commitment.” Addressing the British Indian community, he said, “Through hard work, values, and generosity, you have shaped our economy, enriched our culture, and strengthened our nation in countless ways.”

“Diwali’s message is that light triumphs over darkness and hope conquers fear. This message reminds us that no matter what challenges lie ahead, our shared values of hard work, decency, and service will guide us forward.”

Diwali

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a major religious and cultural celebration originating in the Indian subcontinent, primarily observed by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains. Its history is rooted in ancient legends, most commonly the story of Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom after 14 years of exile. Today, it symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness and good over evil, celebrated with lamps, fireworks, feasts, and family gatherings.

Located in London, the building was offered to Sir Robert Walpole by King George II in 1735, who accepted it on the condition that it be a gift to the office of the First Lord of the Treasury, a title often held by the Prime Minister. It has since become an iconic symbol of the UK government.
