Hyderabad, Following the government’s Mahalakshmi scheme, the use of public transport by women has increased in Hyderabad and other urban and rural areas of Telangana. However, concerns regarding safety and awareness remain largely unaddressed. Many women still hesitate to use public transport and are unaware of how and where to report incidents promptly.
A team of five students from a city college conducted a survey on women traveling in RTC buses. The survey revealed that 52% of women feel uncomfortable due to overcrowding, while 23% believe the situation is acceptable. The team emphasized that public transport should be inclusive and that proper behavior is necessary to make it a pleasant experience for everyone.
The survey, conducted by a team from a management education institute, focused on the real experiences of female passengers. Based on the findings, recommendations were submitted to the RTC Managing Director and the Police Director General of the Women’s Safety Wing. The suggestions included displaying QR codes in visible locations on buses to allow women to report incidents directly to authorities. The report also highlighted the need for greater awareness campaigns and improvements in infrastructure and staff behavior. The team believes these changes could make Hyderabad’s RTC bus system a model for the country and beyond.
