Seven people dead in four days after three sisters and a brother and sister drown in a tank.
Bikaner: In the Bajju area, open water tanks continue to claim innocent lives, yet the responsible authorities remain unresponsive. In Modia village, a brother and sister (relatives) died tragically by drowning in a tank while drinking water. Hours later, the bodies of the two children, who had gone to graze goats, were found floating in the water, causing chaos and wailing in the village. After the recent death of three sisters in Grandhi, the lack of safety measures raises serious questions about the administration’s effectiveness.
According to information, Wakila (10), daughter of Hasan Khan, and Yunus (6), son of Shaukat Khan, left home on Wednesday to graze goats. Around 1 p.m., feeling thirsty, they approached a nearby tank. One child slipped and fell into deep water. The other tried to rescue them but also drowned.
When the children did not return home for a long time, family members began searching. During the search, the goats were found, but the children were not. Later, Yunus’s body was seen floating in the tank. Villagers, with the help of a swimmer, retrieved both children and took them to Dantor Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
According to villagers, Yunus was visiting his maternal grandparents’ home in Modia village. The family had called him to stay there for the upcoming Eid festival, but the accident took away the family’s joy before the holiday. The village is in mourning after the incident.
Following repeated accidents, it is essential to install walls, grilles, and warning signs around open tanks in rural areas. The administration must strictly enforce this. If safety measures are not taken in time, such accidents will continue to occur.
