Greater Bengaluru Local Planning Area
The Greater Bengaluru Local Planning Area refers to the expanded metropolitan region surrounding Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), India, which is governed by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA). Established to manage the city’s rapid urbanization and population growth since the late 20th century, this planning area encompasses the core city, surrounding municipalities, and rural zones to coordinate infrastructure, housing, and land use. Its history is tied to Bengaluru’s transformation from a colonial-era cantonment into a global tech hub, with the BDA playing a key role in shaping suburban expansion since the 1970s.
Hudson Circle
Hudson Circle is a historic traffic circle located in the Allendale neighborhood of Erie, Pennsylvania. It was developed in the early 20th century as part of the city’s expansion and is named after the nearby Hudson Street. The circle features a central grassy island and serves as a residential and community focal point, reflecting the area’s early suburban planning.
Bengaluru
Bengaluru, also known as Bangalore, is the capital of India’s Karnataka state and is renowned as a major hub for information technology and innovation, earning the nickname “Silicon Valley of India.” Its history dates back to 1537 when it was founded by a local chieftain, Kempe Gowda I, who built a mud fort and established a town that later grew under the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire, the British, and the Wodeyar dynasty. Today, it is a vibrant, multicultural city blending historic landmarks like the Bangalore Palace with modern skyscrapers and lush green spaces.
Karnataka
Karnataka is a state in southwestern India known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. Historically, it was home to powerful dynasties such as the Vijayanagara Empire and the Chalukyas, whose architectural marvels like Hampi and Badami still stand today. Its capital, Bengaluru, is a major hub for technology and innovation, while the state also preserves classical art forms like Carnatic music and dance.
Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA)
The Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA) is a proposed unified planning and development body for the expanding Bangalore metropolitan region, aimed at coordinating infrastructure and urban growth across multiple municipal jurisdictions. While not yet fully operational, it was conceived to address the challenges of rapid urbanization that followed Bangalore’s transformation into a global tech hub since the 1990s. The GBA seeks to streamline governance by integrating the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) with surrounding areas, building on earlier annexation efforts like the 2007 merger of seven city municipal councils into a single entity.
N.R. Square
N.R. Square is a prominent urban public space located in the heart of Athens, Greece, officially known as “Plateia N.R.” (or “Nea Smyrni Square”). It serves as a central gathering point for the Nea Smyrni neighborhood, which was developed in the early 20th century by Greek refugees from Asia Minor. The square is known for its vibrant atmosphere, hosting local markets, cultural events, and serving as a social hub for residents.
