Bangalore Society: Issuing rules and guidelines for residents is a common practice for housing societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). Most of these are designed to ensure discipline within the premises while providing maximum comfort to flat owners or tenants. However, in a bizarre incident, a society located in Bengaluru’s Kundanhalli Gate area issued guidelines prohibiting bachelor tenants from having guests in their flats after 10 PM. They also stated that if a guest needed to stay overnight, prior approval from the owner via email would be required.

A user posted the society’s notice on Reddit. It read, “No guests are allowed in the flats of bachelors or spinsters after 10 PM. Overnight stays for guests are also not permitted. If necessary, tenants must obtain prior approval from the owner via email, the manager, or the association office, along with submitting the guest’s ID proof.”

Penalty for Breaking the Rules
Additionally, the association stated that bachelors must “strictly” follow the rules. The notice mentioned, “No leniency in case of violations. A fine of ₹1000 or eviction will be imposed for breaking the rules.” The association also shared some general regulations, including “no loud music after 10 PM,” “no late-night parties allowed,” and “no using corridors or balconies for phone calls after 10 PM.”

Residents’ Reactions
Some residents commented, “In this society in Marathalli, monitoring bachelor flats to check if boys are visiting girls’ flats is common. Guards visit bachelor flats to ensure guests have left.” Since being shared online, many users have criticized the rules, expressing frustration. “This is worse than a hostel. You’re paying rent for a flat—it’s yours for the lease period. Who visits your flat or what you do on the balcony should be entirely your decision. Society rules these days seem ridiculous.”
