Indigo Plants Increasingly Rare in Bandung Regency, Historical Traces at Risk of Disappearing

The increasingly rare Tarum plant in Kab Bandung, historical traces at risk of disappearing

The indigo plant (Indigofera tinctoria), which once flourished along the banks of the Citarum River and inspired the river’s name, is now increasingly hard to find in the Bandung Regency area. The scarcity of this plant is believed to be a strong impact of rapid development and land use change in the area around the river.

Previously, it was known as a main source of natural blue dye and an important part of the life of the Sundanese people.
In addition to being used in traditional weaving, the plant also has medicinal properties that are believed to be passed down through generations.

“Now there is almost no more along the riverbanks. The land has been turned into residential areas, industrial zones, and toll roads,” said a researcher.

He added that changes in the landscape also directly impact the loss of local plant species
