The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has unveiled a bold new vision for pre-match ceremonies at the 2026 World Cup, designed to deepen the connection between players and fans while elevating a moment already rich with anticipation.

FIFA stated in an official announcement: The new format has been developed with fans and teams at its core, inspired by tracks from the official 2026 FIFA World Cup album, offering a comprehensive 360-degree interactive concept that transforms the stadium into a shared stage.

New vision from FIFA for playing the national anthem before 2026 World Cup matches

The FIFA statement added: Regardless of where fans are seated, each will have a unique and engaging perspective, with giant national flag banners and carefully placed pitch elements to involve the audience in an authentic and meaningful way.

The statement continued: Players will enter the field accompanied by youth program escorts, from the side closest to their tunnel through a dedicated arch. The pre-match ceremony will include a range of additional visual elements, including a center-circle banner, hand-held national flags, and the iconic FIFA logo spread across the pitch.

The FIFA statement went on: Every player selected in the matchday squad will stand under the lights to gather around the center-circle banner during the national anthem, ensuring that each individual—not just the starting lineup—experiences that symbolic moment of pride and emotion when representing their country on the greatest football stage.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: As the FIFA World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced, and having all players and referees face each other in the center of the pitch during the national anthem will create a moment of unity, pride, and emotion that belongs to the teams and everyone in the stadium. The FIFA World Cup is a tournament for every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that.

The FIFA statement continued: After the two national anthems are played, attention will turn to traditional pre-match rituals, including handshakes and team photos for the starting lineup, followed by the coin toss between the two captains.

The statement concluded: Later in the tournament, the pre-match ceremony will include additional elements such as colored smoke or fireworks. Moreover, the youth program and player tunnel will feature both traditional and new integrations.
