MLA S Rajesh Kumar: Today is a historic day for the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay ended a tradition that had been followed for many years. A leader from the Congress party took the oath as a minister in the state government after about 60 years. Congress has become part of the Tamil Nadu government for the first time since 1967. However, during the oath-taking ceremony, Congress MLA S Rajesh Kumar did something that brought him into the spotlight.
Governor raised an objection
The Congress MLA representing the Killiyur assembly constituency took the oath as a minister. While taking the oath as a minister, Congress MLA S Rajesh Kumar praised former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, which led the Governor to raise an objection. Upon the praise of Congress leaders, the Governor suddenly reminded the Congress leader that this is not part of your oath. After this, S Rajesh Kumar stopped his sloganeering and went to sign his oath document.
Video surfaced
A video of the oath-taking ceremony has also surfaced, in which S Rajesh Kumar said, “May Kamaraj (late Congress veteran from Tamil Nadu) live forever, may Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi (former Prime Minister) live forever, and may the people’s leader Rahul Gandhi live forever.” As soon as he took their names, the Governor stopped him.
Why did the Governor stop the Congress MLA during the minister’s oath in Tamil Nadu?
Congress MLAs given place in the cabinet
Congress, which has five MLAs in the Tamil Nadu assembly, is an important part of the TVK government because Vijay’s party fell short of a majority in the results. Congress was the first to announce support for TVK, which broke its old ties with DMK. Although Congress was an ally of DMK for 20 years, it was never part of DMK ministries in the state. But TVK broke this tradition by giving Congress MLAs a place in the cabinet.
