Addis Ababa, April 23, 2026 The Ethiopian Foreign Minister announced that Ethiopia has achieved historic diplomatic victories over the years of reform, significantly expanding its scope of influence and cooperation prospects.

The minister emphasized that domestic achievements in the areas of economy, institution building, and environmental protection formed the primary foundation for these successes.

In a comprehensive presentation of the results achieved in the diplomatic field, it was noted that the country’s influence in continental and global forums is witnessing a remarkable rise.

A key strategic priority, securing access to the sea, has garnered significant attention in both bilateral discussions and international arenas.

This achievement was described as a major victory, indicating that various global actors are now more aware of Ethiopia’s legitimate pursuit and the necessity of finding a cooperative solution to this issue.

Furthermore, the completion and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was cited as evidence of the resilience of the Ethiopian government and its people, who successfully overcame intense diplomatic pressures to complete the project.

Ethiopia’s accession to the BRICS group as a full member and its active participation therein is additional evidence of its growing international acceptance.

It was explained that Ethiopia is increasingly considered a preferred partner for investment and economic cooperation, with countries near and far seeking to strengthen their ties with Addis Ababa.

High-level reciprocal visits and the signing of strategic agreements were pointed to as tangible evidence of this growing diplomatic influence.

In the past nine months alone, Ethiopia has consistently secured seats in various international decision-making bodies thanks to broad support.

The minister affirmed that the election of Ethiopian candidates to key positions at both the continental and global levels highlights the country’s growing influence.

It was clarified that these diplomatic achievements are deeply rooted in internal progress, noting that economic reforms have strengthened national institutions and improved their capabilities.

Moreover, Ethiopia’s commitment to environmental protection and renewable energy has solidified its position as a model to be emulated. These efforts, along with integrated urban and rural development initiatives, have contributed to enhancing Ethiopia’s status as a prime destination for investment and partnership.

The minister reaffirmed that the harmony between economic growth, institutional strength, and sound environmental management remains the primary pillar of Ethiopia’s diplomatic excellence.

Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a massive hydroelectric dam currently under construction on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia, near the border with Sudan. Initiated in 2011, it is Africa’s largest dam project, designed to generate over 6,000 megawatts of electricity and significantly boost Ethiopia’s power supply. However, the dam has been a source of regional tension, particularly with downstream Egypt and Sudan, who rely heavily on the Nile’s waters, leading to years of complex negotiations over water rights and dam operations.

Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II. It serves as the diplomatic hub of Africa, hosting the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The city blends modern development with historic sites like the National Museum, home to the famous fossil “Lucy.”

BRICS

BRICS is an acronym for an international association of major emerging economies, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later joined by South Africa in 2010. Founded informally in 2009, the group aims to promote economic cooperation, political dialogue, and reform of global governance institutions among its members. It has evolved into a significant platform for addressing shared development challenges and advocating for a multipolar world order.
