The government has approved the doubling of the Dwarka-Kanalus railway line in Gujarat and the construction of third and fourth lines between Badlapur and Karjat in the Mumbai metropolitan area.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, approved the two projects with a total cost of ₹2,781 crore.
The Devbhumi Dwarka (Okha)-Kanalus railway line will improve connectivity to the Dwarkadhish Temple and facilitate the transportation of goods including coal, salt, cement, and other materials. The capacity enhancement works will result in an additional freight movement of 18 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum).
The Badlapur-Karjat section is part of the Mumbai suburban corridor, and the third and fourth line project will improve connectivity in the region. This line will also enhance connectivity to South India.
According to an official statement, the increased line capacity will improve Indian Railways’ operational efficiency and service reliability.
The statement said, “These multi-tracking proposals are fully prepared to streamline rail operations and reduce congestion. These projects align with the vision of ‘New India’, aiming for comprehensive development in the region.”
It stated that these projects are planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultation. These projects will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services.
These two projects, covering 4 districts in Maharashtra and Gujarat states, will add approximately 224 kilometers to Indian Railways’ existing network. The approved multi-tracking project will improve connectivity to approximately 585 villages with a population of about 3.2 million people.
The statement said, “The approved doubling project from Kanalus to Okha (Devbhumi Dwarka) will provide better connectivity to the major pilgrimage site Dwarkadhish Temple and will help in the overall development of the entire Saurashtra region.”
It stated that the Badlapur-Karjat section is an integral part of the Mumbai suburban corridor. This third and fourth line project will improve connectivity in the Mumbai suburban area, meet future passenger demand, and also provide connectivity facilities to South India.
