A river overflowed due to a garbage landslide at the Cipeucang Landfill in South Tangerang City during heavy rainfall.
Flooding hit residential areas around the Cipeucang Landfill in Nambo Village, Serpong Subdistrict, South Tangerang City, following a garbage landslide during heavy rain.
A video recorded at the scene shows concerning conditions. A large pile of garbage resembling a hill was seen collapsing and mixing with fast-flowing rainwater.
The water, which should have been clear, turned dark black mixed with various waste materials.
The waste material carried by the landslide completely covered the river channel located right in front of the residential area. As a result, the river narrowed drastically and overflowed.
A resident in the video described the floodwaters reaching about knee-high on an adult (approximately 30-50 cm), entering homes.
A man was seen standing in the middle of the flood, showing the severity of the overflow.
“Cipeucang garbage landslide blocked the river flow. The river overflowed to about knee-high,” said the person recording the video.
Residents reported that the river, previously about one meter wide, had become extremely narrow, even narrow enough to step across.
“The river in front was about a meter wide. Here (after being blocked) it’s less than a meter. You can even step across it,” said a resident, indicating the severe blockage.
At the end of the video, heavy machinery (an excavator) was seen beginning efforts to clear the landslide waste pile.
