Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa stated regarding tariff negotiations with the U.S., “The results of the Upper House election will not have any impact.” Minister Akazawa emphasized, “We have always prioritized national interests, so the election outcome will not particularly affect our stance. There will be absolutely no change in our commitment to maximizing Japan’s national interests.” On the 20th, before the Upper House election results were finalized, Minister Akazawa met with Prime Minister Ishiba at the official residence and made these remarks. Regarding the 25% tariffs proposed by the U.S., he indicated, “The negotiation deadline is not necessarily August 1st.” The Prime Minister instructed him to continue discussions aiming for a mutually acceptable agreement between Japan and the U.S. According to government sources, Minister Akazawa is making arrangements to depart for the U.S. as early as the 21st.
