The Toyota Corolla Cross registered in China features a distinct exterior compared to the version sold in Vietnam.
The vehicle is drawing attention due to its unique and distinct appearance compared to the model currently sold in Vietnam.
In reality, this is a version specifically designed for the Chinese market, distributed by the GAC Toyota joint venture with Front Lander. Additionally, China still sells a model very similar to the one in Vietnam, but through the FAW Toyota joint venture.
According to documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the Corolla Cross distributed by FAW Toyota is classified as the “standard version,” equipped only with halogen headlights and taillights, unlike Vietnam’s “full LED” setup even in the base gasoline variant.
Another difference is that the gasoline-powered Corolla Cross in Vietnam only has a 1.5L engine, while the FAW Toyota version offers an optional 2.0L engine producing 171 horsepower.
Images of the “unique” Toyota Corolla Cross from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show a front end resembling an electric vehicle with a slight resemblance to the Camry. Unlike the Vietnamese version, the Chinese model features a nearly seamless grille that blends with the body color.
The headlight design remains unchanged, with horizontal LED daytime running lights and the Toyota logo centered.
Overall dimensions are 4,490mm long, 1,825mm wide, 1,625mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,640mm. Leaked specifications indicate front/rear ground clearances of 1,565mm/1,580mm, front/rear overhangs of 975mm/875mm, and approach/departure angles of 16/20 degrees.
However, the current Toyota Corolla Cross in China already differs in size from the Vietnamese version. Thus, the new Corolla Cross in China, while unchanged from before, is longer than the Vietnamese model.
This is understandable, as many models in China are extended compared to their international counterparts. The Corolla Cross is no exception.
Regarding powertrains, while Japan only offers a hybrid, the Toyota Corolla Cross in China has both gasoline and hybrid options, similar to Vietnam.
Yet again, specifications differ between the two markets. In China, the gasoline engine is a 2.0L M20F inline-4 naturally aspirated unit produced by GAC Toyota, with a maximum output of 171 horsepower. In Vietnam, the gasoline engine is only a 1.5L with a maximum of 138 horsepower.
The new Toyota Corolla Cross in China also comes with notable options such as a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels (the standard version uses 17-inch wheels), and a two-tone paint option with a black roof.
The rear now features “C”-shaped LED taillights similar to the Japanese version but slightly different from Vietnam’s. The rear turn signals have been upgraded to LED.
The rear bumper remains unpainted black plastic, but the lower trim has been changed to a silver-gray finish, creating a contrast compared to the previous glossy black. In Vietnam, the bumper is painted white (gasoline version) or black with textured patterns (hybrid version).
The facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross stands out with its sporty appearance and a range of new premium features. Notably, the GR Sport version is expected to deliver a more exhilarating driving experience thanks to its tuned suspension system.
