U19 Vietnam receives bad news from the strange situation in the U19 Southeast Asian Championship.
Despite winning both first matches of Group A convincingly, U19 Vietnam still faces a huge risk of elimination before the final round.
On the evening of June 6, U19 Cambodia defeated U19 Philippines with a score of 3-0 in the second match of Group C of the U19 tournament.
This result created a rare and interesting scenario in the race for the semifinal spots. All three second-placed teams from Groups A, B, and C have the same number of points (3) and the same goal difference (+3).
The 2026 Southeast Asian U19 Championship has three groups. Semifinal spots are awarded to the top three group winners and the best second-placed team.
Since Group C (Australia, Cambodia, and Philippines) has only three teams, while Groups A and B have four, the tournament organizers must exclude results against the bottom team of each group when comparing the second-placed teams’ records.
Therefore, although Indonesia – the second-placed team in Group A – currently has 6 points and a +6 goal difference, they effectively have only 3 points and a +3 goal difference when compared with other second-placed teams.
Similarly, Malaysia in Group B, despite having 6 points and a +7 goal difference, also effectively has 3 points and a +3 goal difference. Thus, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia – the three second-placed teams – are now perfectly matched in both points and goal difference (all at 3-0).
Another coincidence is that all three of these teams will face the group leaders in the final round. Indonesia meets Vietnam, Malaysia meets Thailand, and Cambodia faces Australia.
This creates numerous fascinating possibilities after the group stage concludes. It is possible that two, or even all three, second-placed teams will have identical records. In that case, the organizers will have to consider secondary criteria such as yellow cards.
From another perspective, U19 Vietnam’s chances of advancing are also somewhat affected by this situation. U19 Vietnam only needs a draw to maintain the top spot in their group, but a loss would drop them to second place.
In that case, the team would be at a significant disadvantage in the race for the best second-placed spot, as the second-placed teams from Groups B and C also have strong records.
For example, if Vietnam loses to Indonesia, while Malaysia draws with Thailand, or Cambodia draws with Australia, then Vietnam will not be the best second-placed team.
Even if Vietnam loses 0-1 to Indonesia and Malaysia loses
