The interim President of Peru announced in a national address on Tuesday a state of emergency in the capital Lima and the neighboring city of Callao. This exceptional measure will last for one month and aims to address a wave of violence that authorities attribute to organized crime.

In a speech broadcast on national television, the President stated: “The state of emergency approved by the Council of Ministers will take effect at midnight (05:00 GMT Wednesday) for 30 days in metropolitan Lima and Callao.”
