Aging population increases musculoskeletal diseases

The rate of spinal curvature due to degeneration in adults increases with age, ranging from 6.3% to 68% of the population depending on clinical studies. In Vietnam, the condition is common, with over 60% of people over 40 affected, leading to an increase in adult spinal curvature deformities.

This information was shared at the international conference “Treatment of Degenerative Scoliosis in the New Era.”

According to neurosurgery experts, in adults, spinal curvature often begins with signs from childhood and worsens with age or when the spine degenerates due to aging.

As life expectancy increases and the population ages, musculoskeletal diseases rise, affecting quality of life. Braces or physical therapy help prevent the curve from worsening in mild cases of spinal curvature, but they do not cure it.

In severe cases of spinal curvature, surgery may be necessary.
