After arresting and interrogating a suspect in the assassination, Ukrainian police stated that Russia is involved in the murder of former parliament chairman Andriy Parubiy last weekend.

Police made a statement on September 1 after arresting and interrogating a suspect in the assassination.

“We know that this crime was not random. There is Russian involvement. Everyone will be held accountable before the law,” the Ukrainian police chief announced on social media.

Russia has not yet commented on this assassination or the suggestion that the country is involved in the incident.

The police chief stated that the perpetrator disguised himself as a postal worker and shot Mr. Parubiy in broad daylight. He fired a total of eight shots and even wanted to make sure the victim was dead.

“He spent a lot of time preparing, observing, planning, and finally pulling the trigger. It only took us 36 hours to track him down and arrest him,” he added.

Police also released two photos from the arrest scene, showing two special forces officers holding a handcuffed man. However, the man’s face is not visible.

The Interior Minister further stated that the suspect was arrested overnight in the Khmelnytskyi region of western Ukraine.

“Many details cannot be shared at this time. I can only say that the crime was carefully planned: the victim’s schedule was thoroughly researched, along with the action route and escape plan,” he wrote on a messaging platform.

The President had previously criticized this as a “horrific murder” affecting “security in a country at war.”

Parubiy, 54, was a member of the Ukrainian parliament and served as its chairman from April 2016 to August 2019. He was one of the leaders of the 2013-2014 protests calling for closer ties with the European Union, which led to the overthrow of Ukraine’s then pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych.

Mr. Parubiy was also secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council from February to August 2014, the period when Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula.
