Earlier, on May 26, a tank containing tens of thousands of liters of a highly corrosive chemical at a factory of a packaging company caused emergency services to launch a large-scale response operation. The chemical, called “white liquor,” is used to break down wood and produce kraft paper, which is used in packaging, shopping bags, and other products.
A city rescue chief said rescue teams were working to find remaining victims in a harsh and dangerous environment. Meanwhile, local authorities reassured the public that drinking water and air around the affected area were not contaminated.
The packaging company is a subsidiary of a paper group. Each year, the company produces 8 billion single-use packaging products, supplying customers in North America, Asia, and worldwide.
