Thai Nguyen Medical College, under the Thai Nguyen Provincial People’s Committee, was merged into Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, part of Thai Nguyen University under the Ministry of Education and Training, in accordance with Decision No. 2345/QD-TTg dated October 23, 2025, by the Prime Minister.
The merger of Thai Nguyen Medical College in its entirety, with 145 staff, teachers, and employees, along with all facilities and equipment, into Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy was implemented at the end of 2025. After a short period, it has brought clear and practical results in many aspects.
In recent years, Thai Nguyen Medical College struggled with recruitment, attracting few students, and thus could not fully utilize its facilities and human resources, leading to waste. Financial autonomy faced many difficulties. Therefore, merging this training institution into Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy was a reasonable move.
This merger not only streamlines operations and reduces administrative units but also effectively uses facilities and teaching staff resources, creating room for Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy to develop, improve training quality, and retrain medical personnel.
After merging Thai Nguyen Medical College, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy now offers associate degree programs alongside the undergraduate and postgraduate programs it has been running in recent years. Therefore, the university has designed an associate degree training program that facilitates students’ ability to advance to undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
When graduating from the associate degree program, students who continue to pursue undergraduate studies do not have to retake credits they have already completed. This saves time and costs for learners. Since the reorganization, the role of commune and ward health stations has become very important for preventive medicine and public health care, requiring higher qualifications and capacity of grassroots medical staff.
Consequently, Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy is well-positioned to train and retrain grassroots medical staff, such as associate degrees in nursing, midwifery, general medicine, pharmacy, and traditional medicine, which are in high demand in localities today.
The merger of Thai Nguyen Medical College creates room for Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy to develop. Specifically, it increases area, facilities, equipment, and teaching human resources, thereby expanding scale and further improving training quality to meet diverse medical staff needs.
Because it failed to attract students, the dormitory system with about 1,500 rooms of Thai Nguyen Medical College was almost unused and wasted. After the merger, the dormitory system will soon be renovated and upgraded to provide accommodation for students of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, eliminating the need for outside rentals.
After the merger, the staff, lecturers, and employees of Thai Nguyen Medical College are optimistic, as they can contribute more to the cause of medical staff training, increase their income, and stabilize their lives.
