The Paris prosecutor stated that the thieves would not be able to obtain a comparable sum if they decided to melt down and sell the stolen jewelry. The prosecutor expressed hope that the criminals would come to their senses and not destroy the precious items.
This amount is truly impressive, but we must remember that this damage is economic in nature and in no way comparable to the historical damage caused by this theft.
The prosecutor noted that the investigation is ongoing and involves about a hundred investigators. It was added that new suspects who assisted in preparing the crime may emerge, despite only four thieves having entered the Louvre.
The Louvre’s director attempted to resign following the robbery. However, the resignation was rejected in light of the museum’s upcoming restoration. The director of the Louvre is appointed by the President of France upon the proposal of the Minister of Culture.
Earlier, Louvre security staff refused to return to work, as they were deeply shaken by the audacious robbery. They intend to wait for management to provide information on how security measures at the museum will be strengthened.
