Tripoli – The Supreme Judicial Council considered that standing with the unity and independence of the judiciary has become a national duty, affirming its commitment to the unity of the institution – the sole legitimate representative of the judicial bodies.

This came in a statement issued on Friday, in which it stated that it had followed with great regret what is happening in the judicial arena, especially attempts by some to undermine the unity and independence of the judiciary by using tools that consider themselves part of the constitutional affairs to replace the Supreme Judicial Council with a harmful council, and to achieve goals that can only be described as narrow political and personal interests, in a manner that usurps all other authorities.

It added that, in order to preserve the unity of the judiciary, act responsibly, and for the greater good of the nation, the Council exercised the highest degree of discipline for a period of time in the face of persistent obstinacy from those who carried these goals to impose a fait accompli that has no result other than tampering with the institution during a sensitive and dangerous phase in the nation’s history, at a time when it is in the greatest need of unity above all else.

The Supreme Judicial Council affirmed that it will remain the sole legitimate representative of the judicial bodies and will not abandon its commitment to the unity of the institution and its members under any pressure, while disregarding any decisions issued by others, and not submitting to those determined to compromise its unity with invalid decisions. It pointed out that history has recorded the clear, honorable positions of all members of the judicial bodies for the unity of their institution and their awareness of those who tried to divide it, and your Council will not compromise its adherence to the unity of the steadfast institution.

Tripoli is the capital and largest city of Libya, located on the country’s Mediterranean coast. Historically, it was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BCE and has since been ruled by a succession of powers, including the Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, and Italians, which is reflected in its diverse architecture like the ancient Red Castle (Assaraya al-Hamra) and old medina. Today, it serves as Libya’s major political, economic, and cultural center.

The Supreme Judicial Council is a high-level administrative body found in many countries with civil law systems, tasked with overseeing the judiciary, ensuring its independence, and managing judicial appointments and discipline. Its history is often tied to modern judicial reforms aimed at separating judicial power from direct executive control, with many councils being established or constitutionally enshrined in the 20th and 21st centuries to uphold the rule of law.
