Tripoli, the capital of Libya, is a historic port city on the Mediterranean coast with roots dating back to the 7th century BCE, when it was founded by the Phoenicians as Oea. It later became part of the Roman Empire, was conquered by various Islamic dynasties, and was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for centuries. The city’s old town, or medina, features landmarks like the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and the Gurgi Mosque, reflecting its layered history of Phoenician, Roman, and Islamic influences.
