Tobruk is a port city in eastern Libya with a strategic history dating back to ancient Greek times, when it was known as Antipyrgos. It gained significant prominence during World War II as the site of a crucial Allied siege and battle, where Australian and other forces held out against Axis powers for eight months in 1941. Today, Tobruk is known for its oil terminal and as a key location in Libya’s modern political landscape.
