To spark interest in science and engineering studies, the “University of Tokyo Faculty of Engineering” initiative, launched three years ago this summer, continues to expand. From programs for elementary, middle, and high school students to reskilling courses for working adults, the effort—supported by corporate partnerships—is growing, with plans for international expansion now under consideration.

“Can light pass through fingers?”
During the junior workshop “Measuring Pulse Waves,” held online on July 26-27 by the University of Tokyo Metaverse Engineering Faculty, young participants submitted questions like this. On screen, Associate Professor Keiichi Nakagawa demonstrated by shining a light on his hand, which turned red. “You’re seeing the colors that weren’t absorbed,” he explained.
Since its launch in fall 2022, this workshop has been held four times, attracting around 450 participants. Covering topics like human physiology, spectroscopy, flame tests, and arterial blood, the sessions guide students through pulse wave measurements while introducing software tools.
The University of Tokyo Metaverse Engineering Faculty was established in September 2022 to address the shortage of digital transformation (DX) talent by providing engineering and IT learning opportunities, promoting diversity and inclusion.
