According to the Utsunomiya Municipal Government and Utsunomiya Chuo Police Station, the bear appears to have been moving southward from the northern part of the city. The municipal government set up an emergency task force for dangerous animals on June 7.
Police said they received a call at around 5:35 a.m. the same day from a man who reported seeing a bear while driving on a municipal road in the Takinohara district in the city. The bear was about 1 to 1.3 meters long and was heading south along the road. The location is a residential area about 700 meters southwest of Minami-utsunomiya Station on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line, near Utsunomiya High School.
